It takes a special talent to look at a basic solid colored dress and imagine the possibilities, especially when shopping online. As a seller of vintage dresses, I find that dresses with a pretty print or some type of trim or decoration will always sell more quickly than those that are a solid color. The solid color dresses get passed over, and yet they are the better investment. A solid color dress offers the canvas on which you can paint the picture you want to present to the world. If you have a flair for accessorizing, you could wear the same dress tomorrow, paint a completely different picture, and no one will recognize it.
Grey is often such a difficult color to sell, but the possibilities of a solid grey dress as your canvas are limitless. Grey is one of those colors that is universal - it look great on almost everyone. Softer and less harsh than black, you can wear any color with it and it will look great. Think about it. Grey works with white, blue, red, green, black, yellow, purple, beige, and orange, or any combination. You can wear it with polka-dots, plaid, or paisley. You can add rhinestones, jet, coral, turquoise, or pearls. The list goes on and on!
In the photo above, the 1949 grey cotton pique dress by Martini has been brightened with an orange sash at the waist and orange shoes. Another great idea? Wear a series of rhinestone pins at the back of your collar if you have short hair. How fun is that?
